Somme Orientation

The 1916 Battle of the Somme is looked upon as the most tragic and horrific battle of the Great War.

Our Somme orientation tour takes you on a real journey of historical discovery.  It is estimated that over one million men were either killed or wounded during the four and a half months of fighting.  There are many poignant sites, memorials and cemeteries, each with their own unique history.  Let one of our experienced local guides tell you the stories of the men who fought the battle whilst you visit sites including

  • The Lochnagar Mine Crater – a huge scar on the landscape providing stark evidence of the underground war.

  • Newfoundland Memorial Park with its preserved trenches, cemeteries and visitor centre. This must-see landscape simply breathes history.

  • Thiepval Memorial to the Missing with over 72,000 names commemorated on its panels. Edwin Lutyen’s masterpiece is a place of great emotion, a place to ponder and ask the question, why?

  • Delville Wood was a site of bitter hand to hand fighting and mass destruction from powerful artillery fire.

These are just a few of the locations visited during the day’s tour.

This tour is a superb way of getting to know the battlefield in the shortest possible time, although we can guarantee that every historical site, memorial and cemetery visited is given the respect and time it deserves.

Our full day Somme Vehicle Orientation tour starts at £150 for up to 4 people.
